What Exchange server certificates are how they\u2019re used<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Communications Servers are\nnotorious for being difficult to install SSL certificates on. Or rather, they were<\/em>\ndifficult before some more recent updates caused them to start playing nicer.\nStill, this initial problem led to the creation of a very specific,\npurpose-made kind of SSL certificate called a unified\ncommunication certificate<\/a>, or what\u2019s known as a UCC. (Some people also call\nthem Exchange SSL certificates, though most defer to using the acronym \u201cUCC.\u201d) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Exchange SSL Certificates Differ from Traditional SSL Certificates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As we mentioned, a UCC is\njust a variant of an SSL certificate<\/a> that\u2019s designed specifically for\nExchange servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of the way Exchange servers have traditionally run,\na UCC can function as a multi-domain or wildcard certificate depending on how\nyou need it configured. While UCCs can\u2019t secure the 250 domains a standard\nmulti-domain offers, it can still secure dozens of websites residing on the\nsame Exchange server. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purchasing a UCC is just as simple as purchasing any other\nSSL certificate: Simply pick the one you\u2019d like and pay for it, then generate\nyour certificate\nsigning request<\/a> (CSR) and private key on your Exchange server and send it\nalong to the certificate authority (CA) you\u2019ve chosen. Validation typically\ntakes just a day or two, at most, then you\u2019ll be able to install it and secure\nyour websites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
