SSL Certificate Issuance Assurance refers to the number of times you can re-issue your certificate from the original issuance date (most are unlimited to the end of cert life) and it’s an important aspect of overall SSL security in general. If there is any reason that you need a new certificate, such as, your server crashing or the replacement of your server then you will need to re-issue your SSL certificate and hopefully the SSL product you selected had a good issuance assurance feature so you can get back the same exact SSL certificate without any hassle, even though it was originally tied to the old server.
What is SSL Certificate Issuance Assurance?
SSL certificate issuance assurance offers its users an opportunity of submitting a new request for an SSL certificate absolutely free of cost. This new request leads to re-issuance of the current SSL certificate with its outstanding available validity.
It is very important for you to make sure at the time of purchase that it is feasible to re-issue the ordered SSL certificate. It is a precautionary step against any uncertain issues arising while transferring data from one server to another.
Note: If it is not feasible to re-issue your certificate because you can't retrieve the SSL's private key, you must purchase a new certificate.
What is the period of Issuance Assurance?
Normally, you can claim your SSL certificate's issuance assurance until your certificate's expiry data. Under normal circumstances, you can re-issue your existing certificate multiple times. However, in the case of DigiCert; products, the re-issuance validity is of 30 days from the date of actual issuance of the certificate. Also with DigiCert (previously known as VeriSign®) products, you will need to buy a new SSL certificate if you claim a re-issuance of the certificate after the validity period.
